Horticulture

India has been bestowed with wide range of climate and physio geographical conditions and as such is most suitable for growing various kinds of horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, nuts, spices and plantation crops (coconut, cashew nut and cocoa). Its horticulture production has increased by 30 per cent in the last five years. This has placed India among the foremost countries in horticulture production, just behind China.

 

While  India is  a large, low  cost agricultural  producer, its share  in global agriculture  exports is minuscule. India produces nearly 11 per cent of all the world’s vegetables and 15 percent of all fruits  and indicates towards vast opportunity for Indian horticulture sector.

 

About the course:

 

The degree programme offers the specialisations in plant conservation, landscape restoration, soil management, landscape and Garden design, construction,& maintenance n the I, II & III year respectively.

 

Horticulturists apply their knowledge, skills, and technologies used to grow intensively produced plants for human food and non-food uses and for personal or social needs. Their work involves plant propagation and cultivation with the aim of improving plant growth, yields, quality, nutritional value, and resistance to insects, diseases, and environmental stresses.

 

Curriculum details would include a suitable mix of general education and skill development which are designed for  specific job roles in aquaculture & fisheries industry. The course includes content which equip skill development component in the candidate. Each year includes practical as well as theory courses which impart appropriate and relevant knowledge to the industry. The candidate will be exposed to project work and  on the job training in the industry as well.

 

Various visiting guest faculty from the horticulture processing and preservation industry  as well as the experienced faculty of the institute would be sharing their knowledge, information, experience, technology with students

 

Eligibility:

The eligibility condition for admission into Bachelors Degree programme shall be

 

1. Intermediate or10+2 or equivalent in any stream

2.Agricultural Polytechnic,Horticulture Polytechnic or any other equivalent course

 

Career Prospectus

Urban  horticulture  will help bring  about large increase in total fruits & vegetable production due to higher levels of investment  and intensive farming by individuals and institutions. With increasing income levels demand for high value fruits, vegetables and herbs are  increasing rapidly.

 

• Landscaping consultant: Urban  Horticulture  includes urban  landscaping, terrace  farming, development of  parks, golf courses, indoor  decoration with ornamental plants  etc which has entertainment value  and combines well with urban life style and thereby, generate opportunity for employment for semi skilled workforce.

• Floriculturist: Floriculture is a branch of Horticulture, which deals with the study of growing and marketing of flowers and foliage plants. Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for sale or for use as raw material in cosmetic and perfume industry or in the pharmaceutical sector.

• Plant Pathologist: The role of a plant pathologist is learning about the diseases that attack plants. Their research is not only to help cure the plants of these diseases but to also learn more about how to cure diseases in people. You will grow plants in a laboratory, inject plants with pathogens and watch and record the results. You will also take samples of diseased plants and run tests on them to determine the characteristics of the disease and to find out how that disease responds to certain forms of treatment you will need to perform a range of experiments.
